{"id":84,"date":"2022-11-12T22:43:15","date_gmt":"2022-11-12T22:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/berrow.me.uk\/alison\/?p=84"},"modified":"2022-11-19T22:03:24","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T22:03:24","slug":"week-five-rhetoric-and-metaphors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/berrow.me.uk\/alison\/week-five-rhetoric-and-metaphors\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 5: Rhetoric and Metaphors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cthe art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8221;\u00a0visual rhetoric is\u00a0<b>the use of visual images to communicate meaning<\/b>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Today I feel like I\u2019m at the point in the Lectures where I need some plain English\u2026unfortunately that\u2019s not happening!\u00a0\u00a0(no disrespect is directed towards my expert lecturers who really know their stuff)\u00a0 \u00a0 I am beginning to wonder if it\u2019s because I am attempting to complete a degree course with its basis in art (everything gets explained in a very overly descriptive way or \u2018a bit flowery\u2019 as my mum would have said!) or whether my age and intellect is just letting me down?\u00a0 Either way I will still try to complete this week\u2019s task but have a feeling I may have to consult the dictionary again for sure!<\/p>\n<p>My chosen Photographer is Jane Bown.\u00a0 This woman seemed to have the most amazing talent for capturing wonderful moments with her clients.\u00a0 Most of her iconic shots are in black and white but in such a short space of time with her clients she always managed to \u2018find\u2019 something striking.\u00a0 I feel sure that some folk with a camera\u00a0 just have \u2018it\u2019 (whatever \u2018it\u2019 is) and others have to try an awful lot harder.\u00a0 Currently I\u2019m not sure I am even in the running!<\/p>\n<p>The image I have chosen is of Anthony Frederick Blunt (1907 -1983).\u00a0 I particularly like this image because he is looking beyond the camera, a visual rhetoric which is very effective.<\/p>\n<p>Blunt was a professor in the history of art and after working for MI5 secured a position as the \u2018Surveyor of the Kings Pictures\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The image that Bown took of him is quite poignant he is sitting at a desk with a book which has the royal monogram on it.\u00a0 The light is coming from the window with broken shadow falling across his face, leaving a shaft of light on his eye which almost makes him look as though he is peering through a keyhole.\u00a0 His hand is placed on the highlighted book which is in complete contrast (antithesis) to the tense shadows on Blunt himself making him a very mysterious looking figure, which projects further contrast to his job title,<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-85\" src=\"https:\/\/berrow.me.uk\/alison\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Anthony-Frederick-Blunt-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/berrow.me.uk\/alison\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Anthony-Frederick-Blunt-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/berrow.me.uk\/alison\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Anthony-Frederick-Blunt.jpg 736w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>but considering that in his later years he was revealed as a Russian spy The image puts him in quite a fitting light.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cthe art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the exploitation of figures of speech and other compositional techniques.\u201d &#8221;\u00a0visual rhetoric is\u00a0the use of visual images to communicate meaning.&#8221;
